What really goes on behind the doors of an 037 workshop? What goes on inside the head of someone who builds 037s? The answers to these questions may not quite be what you expect, but in our new video podcast, The Drawing Board, we strive to find the real answers!

Each episode is a casual conversation between Carteroni 037 engineer Allan Carter and Connie, two people who love the Lancia 037 and want to bring more of these cars into the world.

In our first episode, Allan and Connie take aim at Rebel’s biggest project: building an AWD 037.

What are the challenges to building a car like this? How is Allan planning to tackle the project? Will the AWD car be a radical departure from its 1980s source material? Over Part 1 and 2 of our first episode, these questions get answers. They may not quite be what you think, but they certainly are the honest truth!

Allan updates us on his 037 fuel tank design:

This week, he has been focusing on the fuel pickup - with the goal to create a competition-ready design with built in redundancy all while utilising off-the-shelf parts to make manufacturing easier and less expensive. The finished tank designs will be used in our 2WD 037 Continuation car and the AWD 037.

Once the fuel tank designs are finialised, Allan’s attention will refocus onto the finishing touches of our full-spaceframe 037 chassis design - more on that soon!

AWD 037 Question time: What will we need to modify in the front of an 037 to allow it to accept a front diff and axles?

As Allan explains, there’ll be some big changes made, particularly to the position of the radius arm’s mounting point, and the top shock mount.

Luckily for us, we have the benefit of hindsight: by studying the AWD Delta S4 - the 037’s successor - we can create a revised 037 front spaceframe design that’ll allow for AWD to be included more easily, all without straying from the (excellent) Lancia recipe book.

Drawing on over 30 years experience, and 16 years involvement with 037 re-creations, Allan’s focus is to continue building on the ethos laid down by Lancia in the early 80s - culminating in 037s that incorporate designs like a full tubular chassis and AWD.
